Android Smartphones

Two new Android smartphones phones were announced at CTIA this week. Samsung’s Galaxy S and HTC’s Evo. Out of the two HTC’s Evo is the more interesting one as it is capable of taking advantage of Sprint’s 4G network where available. Evo also touts great multimedia features (HD videos, outputting video via HDMI). It is interesting that both phones have strong social networking aggregation capabilities. One calls it “SocialHub” and the other “Friend Stream.” Social networking integration and aggregation is quickly becoming (if not already) table stakes on most smartphones. Vendors will need to find other areas of differentiation and its perceivable that for the next year or two, as the operators build out their 4G networks, network capability could be a strong differentiating factor.

We will have to see how aggressively Sprint will market the Evo. Hope they find another agency than the one that created the poorly received Pre campaign. Although this just means more pain and suffering for Palm as the new offerings make the Pre even more dated and less desirable.
